The Opava-based historian Vincenc Prasek was the first to point out the medieval origin of the structure, claiming that it was built by order of Přemek I, Duke of Opava († 1433), as a urban castle at the beginning of the 15th century. The following generations of historians continued Prasek's undertaking. Based on the analysis of written sources, they reconstructed the history of the castle that was rebuilt into a four-wing Renaissance palace at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. At the end of the 20th century, they even attempted to reconstitute the original appearance of the Gothic urban castle. Beginning in 2005, the former structure was specified by partial architectural research and the related building history research of 'Müller's House', the only surviving aboveground part of the castle compound, which helped to confirm or rather correct the earlier findings, and moreover brought a number of new items that could not have been discerned from the scarce archival materials.
