The Harrach Family Farmyards

The article describes the Harrach family farmyards and their transformation from the 18th to the early 20th century. The first part is devoted to the Harrach Baroque farmyards in the Jilemnice domain. Greatest attention is paid to the agriculturally most significant Sadová domain with the residential castle Hrádek u Nechanic. It is based on terrain research conducted by the National Heritage Institute during 2005-2011 and later partial research and documentation. It uses the maps and detailed descriptions of farmyards from 1863, 1899, and 1909. The first part shows the estimated condition of the farmyards in 1829 when the Harrachs bought the domain with the farmsteads. It then features partial rebuilding of the farmyards under Franz Ernst Harrach by the 1860 s when his son Johann Nepomuk took over the administration of the domain. The main part is dedicated to the extensive transformation and modernisation of the farmyards under Johann Nepomuk, Count of Harrach, a significant agricultural expert, which was mostly carried out during 1884-1906. The article monitors the gradual development, the dates of which are recorded in archives, as well as the construction and architectural form of outbuildings, including their material aspect. Some farmhouses in the Želeč and Žinkovy domains are mentioned. In conclusion, the typology of farmhouses in the Sadová domain is summarised and compared to the similarly extensive development on the domains of other owners at the close of the 19th century.
