Guidelines for Authors for the Journal Průzkumy památek

Průzkumy památek / Czech Journal of Historical Monuments’ Research is a multi-disciplinary peer-reviewed journal, serving as a publication platform for extensive studies and short contributions arising from basic research of movable and immovable monuments of various kinds, primarily focusing on research of architecture. Emphasis is placed on publishing and assessing the research activities as well as publishing synthetic texts dealing with certain themes or a selected group of monuments. The main objective is to publish new findings from terrain research in the fields of archaeology, building history, art history, and restoration. Furthermore, texts on natural history, analysing the material essence of the monuments, are welcomed as well. The geographic scope of the journal covers the terrain research of the Czech Republic with overlap into the neighbouring countries.

All of the articles are original, provide a variety of expert views on the given theme, and are complemented with a foreign-language abstract and résumé. Naturally, they also include keywords as well as fundamental information about the authors and their contact information. The journal consists of a peer-reviewed section (studies and materials) and an unreviewed section (reports, a chronicle, publication reviews, bibliography).

Submission deadlines:

The annual submission deadlines are:
First Issue: 1 March
Second Issue: 31 August

Peer-Reviewed Manuscripts

Manuscripts sent to the editors for publication in the peer-reviewed section of the journal must meet all standard requirements of a scientific text. They must be original, authored, and yet unpublished. They must also contain full references to sources formatted according to the journal’s citation rules. Furthermore, the editors must be provided with a basis for a foreign-language résumé (a summary of the conclusions of the text), abstract (a brief introduction of the text), and an image appendix in print quality with captions. The optimum article length is 15–40 standard pages (1 page = 1,800 characters including spaces); in terms of the number of images and plan documentation used, one image per one standard page is desirable. Exceptionally, larger texts with more images can be submitted as well; however, this requires advance approval of the editors of the journal. The minimum length for peer-reviewed studies is 5 standard pages. Shorter texts are automatically included in the unreviewed section.

Unreviewed Manuscripts

The unreviewed part of the journal contains shorter texts. They are usually short articles which discuss a broader range of genres, including:

  • Reports on partial discoveries, small scope renovation, etc.
  • Reviews, recommendations for new literature or exhibitions
  • Information about related events (conferences, seminars, events, workshops)
  • Personalities: personal messages, anniversaries, obituaries, profiles

The length of unreviewed papers is approximately 5–7 standard pages; the reviews should be about 2–5 standard pages. The number of illustrations is about 1–3 images per 2 standard pages. Exceptionally, after a prior consultation with the editors, longer articles may be published.

Once the text is accepted for publishing, it undergoes linguistic, graphic, and editorial revision. Prior to publication, the adjusted text is provided to the author(s) for proofreading along with a copyright licence agreement.

By publishing all parts of their article in the journal Průzkumy památek, the authors give consent to the publication of their work on the journal’s website.

Formal Requirements

Manuscripts submitted for peer-review must include:

  • A text annotated according to the citation conventions
  • An abstract (c. 600 characters including spaces)
  • Keywords
  • A list of images that must include the name of the author or the institution providing the image and the year it was taken
  • A list of sources and references that must include all works cited in the text. Instructions for creating the list and citations can be found here.
  • Materials for a foreign-language résumé no longer than 1–2 standard pages (1 standard page = 1 800 characters incl. spaces) that summarizes the main theses of the paper
  • Print quality illustrations. Please note that images of insufficient quality may cause the rejection of the manuscript. Illustrations must be submitted as separate image files, i.e. not as part of a Word or PDF document. Instructions for submitting the images can be found here.
  • Author’s personal information (name, degree, institution, e-mail address, ORCID id), including the licence agreement details (date of birth, residential address)
  • Dedication (if the article was supported by a grant or was part of a scientific assignment)
  • The authors are responsible for the correctness of their papers and for providing the copyright and reproduction rights for illustrations.

Manuscripts submitted for one of the unreviewed sections must include:

  • Text (footnotes are recommended)
  • A list of illustrations, illustrations and personal information about the authors in the same format and scope as for the peer-reviewed manuscripts
  • Résumé (1–2 standard pages), summary of the article’s contribution, main conclusions

List of Sources and Literature, Citations in Footnotes

The editors accept articles that follow one of the citation standards marked as A) and B) (based on “ČSN ISO 690 (01 0197) – Bibliografické citace. Obsah, forma, struktura. Praha 1996”). The titles of journals and collections are not abbreviated. For a better clarity, please take a look at the fabricated sample passages below.

A) “Historical Citation”

The text includes notes (numbers) related to relevant footnotes on the same page. The authors are kindly asked to place the numbers in superscript and with a single parenthesis, i.e.: xxxxxxx16) xxxxxxx. List the notes at the end of the article. In the footnotes, italicize the author’s name. Separate the bibliographic data within the same title with commas. In case of references to more works, use a semi-colon to separate the citations. If some bibliographic data repeats in the footnotes, it can be replaced by an abbreviation op. cit. with a reference to the footnote that includes the full version. It is recommended to state the name of the publishing house. Place a comma after the title of an article in the journal or collection, and a full stop after the title of a monograph (before the place of publication).

B) “Natural Scientific Citation”

A reference to the cited work with relevant pages is placed in parentheses in the text. Complete bibliography data of the cited work is listed in alphabetical order in the list of sources and literature that follows the text. Italics are reserved for the author’s surname and the year of publication. In case of referring to more publications, separate the references in the parentheses with a semi-colon.

In very special cases, numbered notes can be applied for this citation standard, yet only if they have objective content.

2. List of Sources and Literature

Sources are documents (documents, building history research manuscripts, finding reports, correspondence, etc.) unpublished in print. They usually come with a ref. no., inv. no., or other number designation, and they are kept in a relevant location. This information must be stated accurately.

Literature references include monographs (a full stop preceding the place of publication), articles in collections (title of article, in: title of collection, place of publication, pages), and articles in journals (title of article, periodical, pages). Italics are reserved for the authors of works; the names of editors are not italicized.

Submission of Materials and Scope of Texts

Texts must be submitted electronically (CD, e-mail) and in a single standard copy. Manuscripts are accepted in the Word text format (doc, rtf).

One page of the manuscript = 1,800 characters including spaces, 60 characters / 30 rows; (e.g. Courier font, 12 point, 1.5 spacing)

The names and titles must be identical throughout the text.

Abbreviations must be stated in full form when first used.

Paragraphs are not indented (neither tabulators nor spaces should be used). The Enter key ends a paragraph, indicating that a new paragraph starts. As a result, the Enter key should be used only at the ends of paragraphs.

Do not use word division.

Space – there is only one space between two words. Always place a space after an abbreviation or ordinary number with a full stop: no. 518.

Parentheses and quotes are placed right next to the word: word (word), “word”.

Differentiate the en dash from the hyphen. The en dash is not a hyphen.

Use the en dash with a single space at either side: word – word (word space en dash space word).

But: do not use space for intervals (of pages, years, dates): number–number (number en dash number) (1257–1306). The hyphen never comes with spaces: pre-war.

The names of administration parts use hyphens, not en dashes: Prague-Vršovice, Prague 4-Krč.

Illustrations

The quality of the images submitted is crucial for the quality of the journal. Therefore, it is important to pay special attention both to the graphic quality and the way the source of the image is provided:

  • The source for each image must be clearly identified, be it the author or the institution which provided the image. Images freely downloaded from the Internet will not be accepted for publication, unless the author submits the licence and the image is of sufficient quality.
  • When using copyrighted images (reproductions of paintings, archival documents etc.), the author is responsible for obtaining the necessary permissions. The editors can also help with any related formalities; however, this needs to be discussed in advance.
  • Pay attention to the technical parameters of the submitted images – images which seem to be of high quality on a computer screen are often unsuitable for printing. Please keep in mind that images of poor quality might be rejected by the editors.
  • To submit raster images in digital form, the file must be in tiff or jpg format with minimal compression (maximum quality). Use a resolution of at least 300 dpi and 600 dpi when scanning line art. In general, each image should be at least 1 MB in size. The images should be sent unedited. Do not try to increase their size or resolution artificially!
  • Vector images (e.g., plans, maps, charts) should be submitted in pdf, ai, eps, or dwg format. When submitting originals, make sure they are clean and smooth without any frames or mountings. Do not submit damaged images. Any texts or notes on the back of the image must not be visible on the front side in any form. The photographs must have sufficient contrast and should be sharp. If it is not clear how the image should be positioned, make sure to mark the bottom edge of the image on the reverse side. Make sure that a graphic scale and floor plans with cardinal points are always included in the image.
  • If you use hatching to distinguish the age of individual structures in the floor plan or sectional view, use the methods established in the studies of the Czech institute SÚRPMO (Specialized Institute for Reconstructions of Historical Cities and Objects): Romanesque masonry – in black, Gothic period – diagonally cross-hatched, Renaissance structures – vertically cross-hatched, Baroque period – diagonally hatched, first half of the 19th century – dotted, after 1850 – in white. It is possible to mark the hatching on a second copy of the plan, for example with a pencil, which will allow the preparation of another simultaneously submitted “blind” copy of the plan, which will be printed with the use of raster images generated by the computer.
