Restoration Research and Treatment of the Mosaic of Our Lady of the Rosary on the Facade of the Monastic Building Of Congregatio Fratrum Sanctissimi Sacramenti (Petrinum) In České Budějovice

The exterior glass mosaic on the façade of the monastic building of Congregatio Fratrum Sanctissimi Sacramenti (Petrinum) in České Budějovice dates from 1904 and was made by the first Czech mosaic maker Viktor Foerster in collaboration with Jaroslav Pantaleon Major and Desiderius Lenz. The mosaic decoration reflects the Beuron style, thus corresponding to the murals in the church interior. The mosaic's unsatisfactory condition gave rise to the primary inspection. The mosaic decoration showed damage in the form of open defects that uncovered the bedding mortar after mosaic tesserae fell off, and also a big amount of cavities. At first, the initial restoration, art history, and natural history research was carried out; the results were expanded during the restoration. Based on the research, a proposal of restoration treatment was drawn up. Subsequently, essential restoration was carried out to preserve the mosaic.
