Medieval Appearance of Kvasice Castle
Jan Štětina
Průzkumy památek 2020, 27(2):5-34 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2020.2.02
The chateau in Kvasice is a reconstructed castle that was built by the Lords of Benešov probably in the mid-14th century. The castle, which consisted of a tall curtain wall and an eastern palace, was surrounded by a bulwark trench. Research further uncovered the remains of the later northwestern building, probably from the second half of the 14th century. In the Late Gothic period, under the Kužels of Žeravice and the Sternbergs, other palaces and utility facilities emerged in the courtyard, giving the castle core a greater variety of structures around 1500. The Renaissance reconstruction in the late 16th century transformed the castle into a chateau...
The Renaissance Crypt and the Painted Armorial Gallery in Honour and Eternal Memory of the Lords of Vrábí in the Church of Saint John the Baptist at Stražiště near Březnice

Průzkumy památek 2020, 27(2):35-66 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2020.2.03
The Church of Saint John the Baptist at Stražiště conceals under the presbytery a Renaissance crypt that continues the memorial decoration of the liturgical space. During 1613-1616 William Tluksa Vrábský of Vrábí (the Eldest) designed it as a family necropolis. It is necessary to understand the memorial inscription with the painted armorial gallery in the background of a long-lasting dispute over the patronage right between the Vrábský of Vrábí and the Loubský of Lub families that is supported by exceptionally valuable written sources. The ancient tradition of the funeral of the owners of the Drahenice farm in the church at Stražiště is mediated by...

The article deals with the uniquely preserved Renaissance epitaph of the family of knights from southwestern Moravia. Regarding the style, the epitaph appears to be related to the stucco decoration and furnishings of the All Saints Chapel at Telč Chateau. The epitaph is a combination of stonemasonry, stucco decoration, and polychrome that ought to imitate more expensive materials, e.g. marble. Because the work was coated with monochrome paint in the first half of the 17th century and no restoration was carried out until 2018, its original surface treatment has survived to an exceptional degree.

Průzkumy památek 2020, 27(2):83-104 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2020.2.05
The article primarily seeks to present the results of building history research of the Baroque inn in Lukov Village (Central Bohemian Region, Kladno District). Archival research is also part of the presentation. Built of stone, the inn originated in the mid-1680s and later was significantly reconstructed. Nevertheless, its current appearance to a large extent corresponds with the original structure. Concerning the comparative viewpoint, it is important that reconstructions did not significantly change the interior layout from the Baroque period. Many original structures (e.g. ceilings, wainscoting) and architectural elements (e.g. wooden portals) have...
Chapel of the Elevation of the Holy Cross in Knínice

Průzkumy památek 2020, 27(2):105-118 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2020.2.06
The Chapel of the Elevation of the Holy Cross in Knínice (Jihlava District) is a remarkable regional example of sacral space and an architectural monument that originated and was repeatedly reconstructed for the veneration of the Jesuit Saint Francis Xavier. The local cult of this saint was developed first by the Jihlava community of the Society of Jesus and later by the Telč chapter. The presumed accent of this saint appears to be related to the specific function of the Telč house for the 'tertianship' or 'third probation', i.e. the final formal period of formation in the Society of Jesus. Telč used Knínice as a farmhouse with a residence and a pilgrimage...
Former Watermill in Hrubšice near Ivančice
Lenka Kalábová, Matěj Kruntorád
Průzkumy památek 2020, 27(2):119-130 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2020.2.07
Archival research, building history resulting from findings, and dendrochronology enable to date the earliest preserved stage of the watermill's construction in 1613 when the Lords of Lipá possessed the domain. Hrubšice Watermill is precious evidence of a small farming facility of the nobles equipped with a rather complex artistic decoration that is rarely encountered in aristocratic mills and other agricultural compounds.

Discovery of a Fragment of an Early Gothic Stone Baptismal Font in Křešín Village
Pavel Kroupa, Jiří Varhaník, Jan Zavřel
Průzkumy památek 2020, 27(2):131-135 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2020.2.08
The preserved fragment shows parts of two sides of a polygonal structure that belonged to the upper part of a twelve-sided baptismal font. The circumferential relief decoration below the font's top is the most valuable part of the preserved fragment. Certain analogies are found with some friezes with vegetal decoration on the western portal of the church in Porta Coeli Cistercian Convent in Předklášteří near Tišnov whose architecture also ranks in the wider circle of the Danubian art of the second quarter of the 13th century. The discovered fragment provides evidence that the baptismal font, especially its size and artistic decoration, went beyond...
Doors and Windows as Style Joinery Elements of the Log Buildings in the Plzeň Region
Stanislav Plešmíd, Karel Foud
Průzkumy památek 2020, 27(2):135-147 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2020.2.09
Numerous log buildings - houses, granaries, cowsheds, storerooms, barns, and others - enriched the collection of historical vernacular buildings in western Bohemia. They are found in the north and south of the Plzeň Region and the city of Plzeň as well as in the Rokycany, Klatovy, and Domažlice regions. They are made of carefully hewed beams and logs, left without plaster or chinked with clay. Many of them are very old, mostly from the second half of the 18th and first half of the 19th century. Some are of exceptional historical quality, many times being the last representatives of common farming buildings in the past. In addition to doors, style windows...
Comments on the Origin of the Stations of the Cross Made by Dušan Jurkovič on Mount Hostýn and the Problems of Their Renewal
Anna Grossová
Průzkumy památek 2020, 27(2):147-166 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2020.2.10
The new Stations of the Cross was the only implementation of Jurkovič's grandiose architectural and urban concept of the entire pilgrimage area on the top of Mount Hostýn in 1903; however, it did not completely adhere to Jurkovič's design and it was not supervised by him. This study summarises a number of yet unpublished facts that occurred during the construction and that were discovered during the expert supervision of the restoration of Köhler's mosaic paintings installed on this Station of the Cross which began in 2009 and is still in progress. Although only a fragment remained of Jurkovič's idea, it is an exceptional undertaking that is beyond...
