Knights of Volfemberk as donors in a mural at the Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Borovsko

Dalibor Prix, Zuzana Všetečková

Průzkumy památek 2022, 29(1):3-22 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2022.1.01

The article deals with the recently uncovered fragment of medieval murals in the Early Gothic presbytery (today sacristy) of the Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Borovsko (Benešov District). The relatively good-quality painting features three kneeling knights on the eastern part of the southern wall. The well-preserved escutcheon with the armorial figure of a rampant wolf facilitates the association of the depicted knights with the Volfemberk family possessing Borovsko during 1364-1395 as evidenced by surviving records.

Provenance of sandstone used for the construction of the church and chateau at Zahořany

Jiří Adamovič, Kamil Podroužek

Průzkumy památek 2022, 29(1):23-48 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2022.1.02

The study, resulting from the project NAKI DG18P02OVV066 Hortus Montium Mediorum, focused on the provenance of sandstone used for the manufacture of constructional elements of the Church of the Most Holy Trinity at Zahořany and Zahořany Chateau in the Litoměřice District. Their comparison with sandstone from possible source localities employed optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, electron microscopy and microanalysis, helium pycnometry, and mercury porosimetry.

Dendrochronology: OSM method experience when researching selected works of art made of wood

Josef Kyncl, Radek Ryšánek, Alena Tobolková

Průzkumy památek 2022, 29(1):49-62 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2022.1.03

The paper contains a summary of experiences with using the OSM dendrochronological method. During years of use, some significant experiences with its use in works of art surveys have been gained. In the study, selected examples of the several different applied arts and artistic wooden objects are presented. There is a summary of the unambiguous significance and clear results of this unique non-invasive method for dating and providing provenance of works of art in the paper. Using the art history methods, it was not possible to determine the exact origin and dating of the individual objects without serious doubts. Due to their historical value, the...

The Virgin Mary, panel, Telč, panel painting, rosary, research, non-invasive imaging methods

Michaela Ramešová, Michal Vopálenský, Ivana Kumpová, Jaroslav Valach

Průzkumy památek 2022, 29(1):63-80 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2022.1.04

In 2019, research of the panel painting of the Crowned Virgin Mary in Telč Museum, a uniquely preserved regional panel painting of unknown provenance dating from around 1500, was initiated. X-ray and computed tomography techniques were used to analyse the work. Additionally, the object's reactions to a heat stimulus and to infrared radiation were also monitored and evaluated. The radiographic research that compared the painting style technique facilitated the verification of modern-day adaptations of the painting. The research also enabled the authors to describe some aspects of how the painting was created by examining the engraved and brush underdrawings...

Surface treatment of Baroque sculptures in the light of archival sources

Pavel Suchánek, Tereza Horáková, Hana Čobanová

Průzkumy památek 2022, 29(1):81-96 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2022.1.05

The article aims to explain evidence of some sources to interpret the issues of specific types of surface treatments of Baroque sculptures during the early modern period. The study interprets the largely missing works by Johann Philipp Hieber and Anton Müller, artisans who carried out surface treatment of statues, based on several remaining agreements and bills that provide evidence of using not just standard art techniques and materials, but also deal in detail with the finishing touches done by various types of alcohol and oil-resin varnishes. In addition to the general interpretation of discovered knowledge, the study seeks to evaluate the specific...

The palace known as Ohrazenice at no. 128 in Ratibořské Hory from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries: A contribution to the mansion house of the Schwarzenberg mining councillor

Jarmila Hansová, Jiří Bloch

Průzkumy památek 2022, 29(1):97-116 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2022.1.06

Mansion house no. 128 near the embankment of the former Ohrazenice Pond in Ratibořské Hory (Tábor District) was built by the mining councillor Jan Schindler around 1780. The two-storeyed building with two halls on the first floor was not intended for living, but rather as a garden house to receive guests and to serve other purposes. Schindler lived in a nearby palace together with the rest of the Schwarzenberg office workers. After 1804, the house received another wing with a hall - perhaps to turn an earlier house mentioned in 1826 into a residence? The house was never rebuilt or modernised; only its original layout and a large number of authentic...

Capuchin wooden floors in mansion house Ohrazenice no. 128 in Ratibořské Hory

Martin Ebel

Průzkumy památek 2022, 29(1):117-120 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2022.1.07

Two types of wooden floors have survived on the first floor of the Ohrazenice Mansion House in Ratibořské Hory (Tábor District). It was concluded that they are variants of the then popular 'Capuchin floors', although their many details shift the development further, representing a connecting link between grate Capuchin floors and parquet floors.

On the Undervalued parts of historical interiors

Alfréd Schubert

Průzkumy památek 2022, 29(1):121-139 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2022.1.08

The article deals with interior tiling, especially in Prague and Central Bohemia. Moreover, the development of sanitary equipment is mentioned. Initially, Dutch tiles were exceptionally imported from the Low Countries. The production of glazed wall tiles began in Bohemia in the late 19th century. In Prague, they have survived in some edifices and staircase vestibules of tenant houses from the first quarter of the 20th century. The interesting Beuron tiling in the Emmaus Church did not remain. Presented are also samples of tiling in bathrooms, kitchens, butcher shops, spas, and other places as well as leaflets of the ceramic factory in Rakovník.
