Medieval Stone Baptismal Fonts from the 14th-16th Centuries in South and Southwest Bohemia. Typology, Shapes, Decoration

Roman Lavička

Průzkumy památek 2023, 30(1):3-74 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2023.1.01

The study of the medieval stone baptismal fonts in South and Southwest Bohemia is based on long-term research and the documentation of more than a hundred of specimens that have survived with various degrees of completeness. The study aims to clarify the reasons behind the final form of the baptismal font and its influence affected by liturgical requirements and the possible provision of baptismal water. The author deals with the background of the markedly large number of baptismal fonts produced in the late 14th and early 15th centuries, their destiny during the Hussite Wars, and the creation of new ones towards the close of the Middle Ages. The study...

Notes on the Building History of Saint Kunigunde Church in Hostěradice

Matěj Kruntorád, Klára Komosná

Průzkumy památek 2023, 30(1):75-101 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2023.1.02

Dealing with the building history of Saint Kunigunde Church in Hostěradice in the Znojmo Region, the study presents several stages of construction, the most significant ones dating from the 13th and 16th centuries, as substantiated by a number of architectural elements. The authors suggest to adjust the dating of the individual stages based on the building history analysis supported by dendrochronology, probes, and a closer examination of mason's marks. Over centuries, the church underwent a transformation from an early three-aisled Gothic basilica of the Teutonic Order to a four-aisled Late Gothic church of a manorial town reflecting the power of...

On the Early Gothic Form of Saint Bartholomew Church in Kolín. Discovery of the Three-Aisled Church Southern Portal Fragments

Jan Kypta, Filip Laval, Zdeněk Neustupný

Průzkumy památek 2023, 30(1):101-106 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2023.1.03

The article presents the discovered fragments of the Early Gothic exterior entrance on the south side of three-aisled Saint Bartholomew Church in Kolín. The portal was most likely removed around the early 15th century, making way to the side chapel. The jamb fragments of the cancelled entrance are found under the threshold between three aisles and the chapel.

Medieval Appearance of the Mining Chapel near the Village of ©vařec

Jan Večeřa

Průzkumy památek 2023, 30(1):107-119 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2023.1.04

During the reconstruction of the Holy Trinity Chapel near ©vařec (a village in the ®ďár nad Sázavou Region), operative research and documentation were carried out. The acquired knowledge substantially concretised the idea about the chapel's building development. The previously stated origin in the 16th century must be shifted to the second half of the 13th century. Some construction features (longitudinal ground plan, set of Romanesque windows on the eastern façade) indicate that miners from western countries erected the chapel.

Additional Information to the Late Gothic Wayside Shrines in South Moravia

Zdeněk Vácha

Průzkumy památek 2023, 30(1):119-132 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2023.1.05

A considerable amount of wayside shrines have survived in the South Moravian countryside, characterising the local area between the Late Middle Ages and early modern times. Regarding typology and the frequently used stone for the shrines, South Moravia and especially the Znojmo Region formed a single cultural area with Lower Austria in that period of time, which to some extent also applies to the neighbouring Moravian regions. The number of identified examples of this type of small architecture continuously increases, though some are just new findings based on historical photographs of perished structures. The selected examples of these small-sized...
