The Ruff and Cuffs Attributed to Vilém Slavata in Jindřichův Hradec Castle FurnishingsResearch Articles

Veronika Pilná

Průzkumy památek 2023, 30(2):63-72 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2023.2.05

Seventeenth-century authentic parts of clothing are scarce both in the Czech and European context. They include the set of a collar, known as a ruff, and two cuffs that have remained at Jindřichův Hradec Castle. The set is ranked among famous textile relics and been exhibited many times because of its attribution. The article seeks to present these artefacts in view of historical tailoring and lacemaking technology. It provides a detailed description of the construction and technology solution of the two types of laces.

Roof structure above the Presbytery of the Church of Our Lady's Nativity in Miličín - the Power of Tradition and Uneasy Adoption of Construction InnovationsResearch Articles

Jan Veselý, Jan Kypta

Průzkumy památek 2023, 30(2):53-62 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2023.2.04

The current roof of the Gothic Church of Our Lady's Nativity in Miličín (Benešov Region) was created after the town fire in 1644. While the new roof structure above the presbytery was built immediately after the disaster, the nave was roofed more than one hundred years later. The study is focusing with the earlier roof frame. It is especially interesting by using an anachronistic construction with long upward braces and a longitudinal axial frame, typologically going back to the Middle Ages. Here, however, it was combined with a very regressive type of short principals at the time the fully developed type of this construction prevailed in Bohemia....

The Renaissance Granary of Harazim Hamlet near Rájov in the Český Krumlov RegionResearch Articles

Filip Facincani

Průzkumy památek 2023, 30(2):43-53 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2023.2.03

The article deals with the building development of a pre-White Mountain granary at Harazim Homestead (Český Krumlov Region) that was previously outside researchers' interests. Estimated in the late 16th and early 17th century, the granary's origin was confirmed by dendrochronology research and detection of sgrafiti blocks. The walls further showed stone and wooden traces of an earlier structure, perhaps for the same purpose.

The Harrach Family FarmyardsResearch Articles - Studies

Jan Žižka

Průzkumy památek 2023, 30(2):21-42 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2023.2.02

The article describes the Harrach family farmyards and their transformation from the 18th to the early 20th century. The first part is devoted to the Harrach Baroque farmyards in the Jilemnice domain. Greatest attention is paid to the agriculturally most significant Sadová domain with the residential castle Hrádek u Nechanic. It is based on terrain research conducted by the National Heritage Institute during 2005-2011 and later partial research and documentation. It uses the maps and detailed descriptions of farmyards from 1863, 1899, and 1909. The first part shows the estimated condition of the farmyards in 1829 when the Harrachs bought the domain...

The Coat of Arms as a Decorative Element in the Middle AgesResearch Articles - Studies

Robert Šimůnek

Průzkumy památek 2023, 30(2):3-20 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2023.2.01

The article deals with the specific segment of heraldic representations - where coats of arms/emblems, both real and imaginary, did not have a meaning (a reflection of social or other bond), but rather fulfilled only a decorative function. In this respect, the 'heraldic décor' is on the borderline between the heraldic representations that inspired them and the range of decorative elements (vegetal, geometric, figural, and others - letters or signs resembling letters could also be used for decoration, showing the closest analogies with the heraldic décor).

Additional Information to the Late Gothic Wayside Shrines in South MoraviaResearch Articles

Zdeněk Vácha

Průzkumy památek 2023, 30(1):119-132 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2023.1.05

A considerable amount of wayside shrines have survived in the South Moravian countryside, characterising the local area between the Late Middle Ages and early modern times. Regarding typology and the frequently used stone for the shrines, South Moravia and especially the Znojmo Region formed a single cultural area with Lower Austria in that period of time, which to some extent also applies to the neighbouring Moravian regions. The number of identified examples of this type of small architecture continuously increases, though some are just new findings based on historical photographs of perished structures. The selected examples of these small-sized...

Medieval Appearance of the Mining Chapel near the Village of ŠvařecResearch Articles

Jan Večeřa

Průzkumy památek 2023, 30(1):107-119 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2023.1.04

During the reconstruction of the Holy Trinity Chapel near Švařec (a village in the Žďár nad Sázavou Region), operative research and documentation were carried out. The acquired knowledge substantially concretised the idea about the chapel's building development. The previously stated origin in the 16th century must be shifted to the second half of the 13th century. Some construction features (longitudinal ground plan, set of Romanesque windows on the eastern façade) indicate that miners from western countries erected the chapel.

On the Early Gothic Form of Saint Bartholomew Church in Kolín. Discovery of the Three-Aisled Church Southern Portal FragmentsResearch Articles

Jan Kypta, Filip Laval, Zdeněk Neustupný

Průzkumy památek 2023, 30(1):101-106 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2023.1.03

The article presents the discovered fragments of the Early Gothic exterior entrance on the south side of three-aisled Saint Bartholomew Church in Kolín. The portal was most likely removed around the early 15th century, making way to the side chapel. The jamb fragments of the cancelled entrance are found under the threshold between three aisles and the chapel.

Notes on the Building History of Saint Kunigunde Church in HostěradiceResearch Articles

Matěj Kruntorád, Klára Komosná

Průzkumy památek 2023, 30(1):75-101 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2023.1.02

Dealing with the building history of Saint Kunigunde Church in Hostěradice in the Znojmo Region, the study presents several stages of construction, the most significant ones dating from the 13th and 16th centuries, as substantiated by a number of architectural elements. The authors suggest to adjust the dating of the individual stages based on the building history analysis supported by dendrochronology, probes, and a closer examination of mason's marks. Over centuries, the church underwent a transformation from an early three-aisled Gothic basilica of the Teutonic Order to a four-aisled Late Gothic church of a manorial town reflecting the power of...

Medieval Stone Baptismal Fonts from the 14th-16th Centuries in South and Southwest Bohemia. Typology, Shapes, DecorationResearch Articles - Studies

Roman Lavička

Průzkumy památek 2023, 30(1):3-74 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2023.1.01

The study of the medieval stone baptismal fonts in South and Southwest Bohemia is based on long-term research and the documentation of more than a hundred of specimens that have survived with various degrees of completeness. The study aims to clarify the reasons behind the final form of the baptismal font and its influence affected by liturgical requirements and the possible provision of baptismal water. The author deals with the background of the markedly large number of baptismal fonts produced in the late 14th and early 15th centuries, their destiny during the Hussite Wars, and the creation of new ones towards the close of the Middle Ages. The study...
