Stronghold in Útěchovice. On research of a medieval smoky room or already a living room

Ivan Peřina

Průzkumy památek 2018, 25(1):3-24 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2018.1.02

A triangular set of windows with small upper openings was identified in the Útěchovice Stronghold (Česká Lípa region) along with an imprint of a wooden vault frontage. These discoveries as well as other documented findings remarkably shift the current knowledge about the appearance of a medieval living room. Later analogies raise a question when during the Middle Ages the living space changed from a smoky room into a living room where the stove heat could circulate and ventilate the room through an upper opening and which could also conduct combustion products away from light.

Bella, & rara armaria di sua Altezza: Prague Castle Armories in the Time of Ferdinand II, Archduke of Austria

Petr Uličný

Průzkumy památek 2018, 25(1):25-46 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2018.1.03

In 1567, after twenty years as Governor in the Czech Lands, the Archduke of Further Austria Ferdinand II (1529-1595) moved from Prague Castle to Ambras near Innsbruck, taking along 347 pounds of personal armour and weapons. They were the heart of his renowned Ambras collection, enshrined in four armouries and included the armours of remarkable military commanders of his time which constituted the special 'Armoury of Heroes'. It is evident, that he began to collect the armour in Bohemia, yet detailed information was not previously gathered. The article fills in this gap by presenting the armouries and their contents during Ferdinand's governance at...

Interdisciplinary research of murals and stucco decorations of Saint Isidore's Chapel in Křenov

Jakub Ďoubal, Petra Lesniaková, Vladislava Říhová, Jan Vojtěchovský

Průzkumy památek 2018, 25(1):47-70 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2018.1.04

A burial chapel consecrated to Saint Isidore was built between 1706 and 1707 in Křenov (Svitavy district). Shortly after, the interior was equipped with paintings, stuccos, and furniture in the High Baroque Gesamtkunstwerk style. The Fraternity of Saint Isidore (1713-1783) maintained the building; later the local parish took care of it. After 1945, the structure deteriorated; over time, the roof leaked which resulted in the damage to the interior decoration. From 2012 to 2015, the experts and students of the Faculty of Restoration from the University of Pardubice carried out restoration and related works on mural paintings and stucco decorations. At...

Calices arte et pretio exquisitos: Liturgical silver in the Church of the Holy Name of Jesus in Telč from the perspective of church inventories and accounts

Anna Hamrlová

Průzkumy památek 2018, 25(1):71-86 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2018.1.05

The silver liturgical instruments in the Church of the Holy Name of Jesus in Telč provide evidence of the costly equipment of the local Jesuits. A comprehensive study showed the interconnection of the earliest objects with Františka Slavatová, founder of the local college. Comprised of a chalice (G.W. Fesenmayer), ciborium, and cruets with a tray, the set of the Augsburg provenance reflects the generosity of the founder and her contacts with the imperial court in Vienna. Furthermore, the set is completed with a pax (J. Fischer), monstrance (D. Saler), and chalice of F. Svoboda SJ (W. Rossmayer). Chalices by F. I. Schönfeld and F.II. Unverdoben are...

The Žerotín Family Sleighs and Ladies' carousel Sleigh, 17th-18th Century

Šárka Kolářová

Průzkumy památek 2018, 25(1):87-102 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2018.1.06

Carousel sleighs (Carrouselschlitten or Rennschlitten) are a phenomenon of the Baroque court and aristocratic culture. Intended exclusively for ladies and their cavaliers, they were used for special sleigh races. Two one-seat sleighs, which show luxurious handicraft and artistic skills, were part of a sumptuous sleigh collection of the Žerotín family. The heraldic signs indicate their association with the commissioners, in particular with the individual members of the Žerotín family from Moravia, which is rather exceptional among surviving Baroque sleighs.

Varhany kostela sv. Floriána v Kružberku-Starých Lublicích

Jiří Krátký

Průzkumy památek 2018, 25(1):103-112 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2018.1.07

In 1843, the founder of Krnov pipe organ company, Franz Rieger (1812-1885), who worked in Sosnová, proposed construction of a new pipe organ with twelve registers (see Appendix no. 1). Although this proposal did not materialise, in 1873 Franz Rieger and his son provided a description of the current pipe organ along with the realised proposal for the construction of a new pipe organ with cone valve chests (see Appendix no. 2). Marked as the second opus of the Rieger Company in Krnov, this pipe organ has survived without major changes and represents a milestone in the development of the pipe organ production because of its status as the first remaining...

The Arts and Crafts Centre mosaic studio and its predecessors

Vladislava Říhová, Zuzana Křenková

Průzkumy památek 2018, 25(1):113-132 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2018.1.08

The study seeks to verify and complete the basic information about the history of post-war mosaic production, or the history of the most significant socialist mosaic studio in the Czech lands. Many of its artefacts have survived and came under scrutiny of theoreticians and art historians as well as the general public that slowly discovers qualities of post-war architecture and art. Hand in hand with such revealed interest, people often attempt to rescue and restore those artefacts. Therefore, this text should primarily be an elemental overview which supports interest in one of the important fields of monumental art.

Research of the glass cube typology employed in the post-war mosaic art

Irena Kučerová, Zuzana Křenková, Vladislava Říhová

Průzkumy památek 2018, 25(1):133-148 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2018.1.09

The article provides a comprehensive overview of the mosaic cube types produced in the Czech lands that the former Czechoslovak artists used for mosaic art. In addition to the hand-chopped and prefabricated mosaic glass (pressed in plier moulds) and sintered mosaic described in literature, the article examines the production of mosaics and mosaic prefabricates from cut bars which were produced in Železný Brod in the 1950s. The reader learns about additional ways of using bars in mosaic artworks. The article explains differences between vertically and rotationally pressed cubes, localises their production, provides dating, and specifies their appearance....

Gothic-Renaissance stonemason artwork in house no. 510/I in Havel Town in Prague and its relation to Louis Wing at Prague Castle

Michael Rykl

Průzkumy památek 2018, 25(1):149-161 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2018.1.10

A collection of Gothic-Renaissance details, which came from reconstruction of a mid-13th century house, is present in house no. 510/I in the Old Town of Prague. The details are made of marlstone, sandstone, and bricks. Two portals show analogous profiles as the portals of the Louis Wing at Prague Castle. An inscription features the date 1537. The house may have been erected by Jan Hlavsa of Liboslav († 1534) or more likely by his son. This information contributes to the idea of bringing Renaissance stonemasonry from Prague Castle to the city environment during the first half of the 16th century.

Timber roofs of the Hall of Ancestors and the adjacent three wings in Vranov nad Dyjí Castle

Jiří Bláha

Průzkumy památek 2018, 25(1):161-171 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2018.1.11

Research of the timber roof over the Hall of Ancestors in Vranov nad Dyjí Castle facilitated the determination and dendrochronological dating of the elements that most likely came from the original roof truss in the 1690s. There are beams of firs that were cut in 1688+ (d) and 1691/92 (d); today they form oblique supports for the stone sideboards of high dormers that embellish the roof. Although two fragments about 3 m each show empty housing that remained from the previous lap joints, they provide just a vague idea about the structure which spans 18 m at the widest point of the oval. The new timber roofs in the Hall of Ancestors and its vestibule...
