Demolition and New Construction: The Origin of Krakovec Castle in the 1380s

Jan Kypta, Filip Laval, Alena Nachtmannová, Zdeněk Neustupný, Jan Veselý

Průzkumy památek 2019, 26(1):3-24 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2019.1.02

The relatively well preserved ruins of Krakovec Castle (Rakovník District) built in the first half of the 1380s is one of the crucial examples of sumptuous aristocratic residences of the pre-Hussite period. It was built by Jíra of Roztoky, one of the prominent courtiers of King Wenceslas IV. The article mainly deals with the earlier developmental stage of the castle discovered during the excavations in 2015 and 2017. The surprising findings in the courtyard uncovered fragments of cellars from an earlier residence (castle or manor) which was completely razed for construction of the new structure by Jíra of Roztoky.

Medieval Church of Saint Erasmus in Rohozná near Polička

Dalibor Prix

Průzkumy památek 2019, 26(1):25-58 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2019.1.03

Despite its enlargement and reconstruction by František Schmoranz the Elder in the late 19th century, the rustic aisleless church of Saint Erasmus in Rohozná (Svitavy District) retained its medieval core consisting of the straight-ended elongated presbytery and a wide nave. The church has attracted attention since the mid-19th century especially for its unusual vault which gives the impression of a polygonal termination to the oblong choir ground plan. However, during the 20th century and in the early 21st century, attention was reduced to mere mentions in wider explanatory contexts (e.g. Václav Mencl, Jan Sommer, and most recently Jakub Adamski) or...

New Findings about the Life and Work of the Prague Sculptor Petr Prachner (1744-1807)

Kryštof Loub

Průzkumy památek 2019, 26(1):73-84 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2019.1.05

All significant synthetic works about Baroque sculpture art mentioned the Prague sculptor Petr Prachner (1744-1807) as one of the last great artists of the late 18th century. In addition to his best-known undertaking, the decorated altarpiece of the Infant Jesus of Prague in the Church of Our Lady Victorious in the Lesser Town, additional works were ascribed to him, not only in Prague but also in the rest of the Kingdom of Bohemia. At the same time, experts debated about his study stays in London and Mannheim. As a result of my several-year archival research, much traditional information in Prachner's profile can be specified or refused and the missing...

Reistna Colonnade, Rendezvous, and Hunting Lodges in Pohansko and Lány: Origin and Importance of Hardmuth's Structures in the Lednice-Valtice Cultur al Landscape

Daniel Lyčka

Průzkumy památek 2019, 26(1):85-102 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2019.1.06

The Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape (listed in the UNESCO since 1996) constantly attracts public attention. The given article focuses on four voluptuary structures: hunting lodges in Pohansko and Lány near Břeclav, Diana's Temple or Rendezvous in Boří les and Reistna Colonnade near Valtice. Among other things, they have a common builder, Johann I Joseph, Prince of Liechtenstein and architect, Joseph Hardtmuth, the princely construction director. The main objective is to outline the building expanses from the surviving accounts and also to provide a possible explanation of the stone reliefs which are doubtless a key for understanding these structures.

Results of Facade Research on the Former Monastery of Friars Minor in Znojmo

Matěj Kruntorád

Průzkumy památek 2019, 26(1):103-110 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2019.1.07

Masonry research, which was uncovered to a certain height above the ground level on the majority of outside facades of the former Monastery of Friars Minor and its church fragment, was designed to determine the scope of medieval masonry as well as later reconstructions in the compound during the 2nd quarter of the 19th century (court, prison, housing) and after 1946 (museum). Tens of secondarily deposited stone architectural elements were identified on the facades, among which rib vaults with wedge and pear-shaped profiles stood out as well as a cluster vault pier. The research discovered that medieval masonry has survived on a rather smaller scale...

Findings of Geometric Graffiti in the Sokolov Castle Plastering

Jakub Chaloupka, Petr Růžička

Průzkumy památek 2019, 26(1):110-126 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2019.1.08

The article examines the documentation and analysis of geometric graffiti discovered on the Sokolov Castle. The graffiti are made of engraved individual or concentric circles. The article compares them with the findings at Bečov nad Teplou Castle, in the compound of the former Cistercian monastery in Plasy, and with selected examples abroad.

Two Unknown Baroque Drawings in the Collection of the Silesian Museum in Opava

Alena Bohdalková

Průzkumy památek 2019, 26(1):127-134 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2019.1.09

Analysis of two drawings in the collection of the Silesian Museum in Opava. It is an attempt to determine the creator and date, evaluate the style grounds, and incorporate the drawings into the cultural context of 18th century Central Europe. The two drawings from this period can be set in the circle of prominent figures active around the mid-18th century, specifically to the painter Josef Winterhalder the Younger (1743-1807) and Paul Trogeri (1698-1762). Furthermore, the Opava drawings show relations to other works Baroque artists.

Log House in North Plzeň Region - New Field Research Findings

Karel Foud, Stanislav Plešmíd

Průzkumy památek 2019, 26(1):134-145 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2019.1.10

The North Plzeň Region is a traditional area of log and half-timbered houses. A numerous group of log structures, residential houses, cowsheds, storerooms, granaries, and barns has survived. The reconstruction in progress allowed learning more about some of the houses. From the research of selected structures, many joinery fillings of construction openings, i.e. windows and doors, were detected. Dendrochronology of wooden construction elements from the mid-18th century to the 1820 s significantly contributed to determine the dates of the researched buildings.

Laminate Statue Velocity in the Light of Complex Restoration Research

Josef Červinka, Zuzana Křenková, Vladislava Říhová

Průzkumy památek 2019, 26(1):145-156 | DOI: 10.56112/pp.2019.1.11

The article presents the restoration research of Jiří Novák's (1922-2010) laminate statue Velocity. Artists began to use fibreglass after the mid-1960s and Velocity was created as early as 1958-1961. In a European context, it is an early example of using 'modern' synthetic material. The chemist Miroslav Schätz cooperated in the making of the statue which was laminated from dark blue-hued polyester resin with the addition of metal powder. The complex research included: visual research, endoscopic research, photogrammetry, 3D scanning, and material research.
